At any given moment, Wood Tavern could be just what you needed. A “bar’s bar” according to their website, Wood is a no-frills, no bull sort of place that welcomes just about everyone and their pets. Located in the heart of the ever growing wynwood area, Wood has gone from a small hole in the wall venue that popped onto the scene during last years Art Basel and remained a fixture ever since.
Like most Miami watering holes, Wood Tavern does its best to take advantage of our friendly weather with a large (partially covered) outdoor seating section complete with its own bar. Unlike most Miami watering holes, Wood has an unusually high number of bathrooms (4 total) for a spot that isn’t all that large, a fact that I am most thankful for even when I visit Lester’s next door.
Despite the fact that Wood offers a vast array of both bottled and draft specialty beers, it is my opinion that the bar’s success stems from it’s realization what as people get drunk, they get hungry. With their built in Cadillac turned taco stand, Wood Tavern stands uniquely poised to meet the salty needs of even the hungriest hard core weekday guzzler. Add to that the fact that they often bring in food vendors and vary their offerings, the winning combination of food and well priced drinks keeps us going back week after week.
Fortunately, as their popularity grows, so do their opening hours. What began as a place to chill two days a week has now expanded to offer some amazing thing every day. On Mondays you can stop by and get free chicken wings with purchase of a pitcher of beer 5pm-10pm and stick around for Industry Night (50% off Wells and Draft Beer) from 11pm-Close. On Taco Tuesdays, tacos are on the house and beer is only $3 until 8pm, so you head over right after work, and eat your little heart out for the price of free. On Hump Day Wednesdays, Wood teams up with Jolt Radio and offers $5 Jack Daniels all night as well as a $6 Beer/Tequila Combo and also Gringo Bingo the first Wednesday of the Month. Thursdays you can feel less guilty about all those tacos you ate on Tuesday by riding your bike to Wood, where Classic Bikes lovers gather to jam to tunes by Ray Milian & Friends in addition to getting 50% off drinks from 5pm-8pm. Friday nights don’t have a special theme, but you can still stop by and take advantage of the weekly Taco Happy Hour with $1 Tacos that the venues hosts from 5pm-8pm Wednesday – Saturday. The venue also recently launched a Saturdays 80’s night, with local DJ Induce playing all 80’s classics (indie, pop & rock) every Saturday with occasional live performances. On Sundays, wood keeps it low key, and since they know people work, opens from 3pm-9pm (unless the weather takes a sh*t on their plans) for Backyard boogie, the venues longest running weekly. Stop in for one of their delicious house made spiked Raspberry Lemonades or sweet teas and unwind before the work weeks starts.
Wood really does have something for everyone, and with their low key atmosphere, relaxed dress code, friendly staff, delicious tacos and prime location, it poised to become one of the major hang out venues for the upcoming “festival” season (Basel, WMC). My suggestion: Come out on a tuesday, enjoy the free tacos and Native Brew on draft. Bring your dog (or parrot or prairie dog, because apparently, all are welcome) with you and just chill for a while. Chances are, you’ll either leave with a new friends, having bumped into an old one, or with a new favorite spot.
